Presence in agro climatic zone

Northern hill

For climatic and anthropogenic reasons, springs are drying up at a rapid pace, which aggravates the challenges of people inhabiting the hills. Springs, the point outlets of the underground water-bearing strata, have an adverse balance in recharge and need their management. Management of the springshed needs to work on hydrogeological mapping and investment for recharge activities in the springs. Prasari has partnered with state governments (the governments of Meghalaya and West Bengal) to map the springs, analyze their hydrogeological profiles, and carry out recharge activities.

Terai Teesta Alluvial

The region is divided into two parts; one is Tea Garden area and another one is Basty area. Despite average annual rainfall of almost 3000 mm, this region predominantly faces scarity of in adequate water for drinking, household chores and husbandry purpose. Being mostly ST populated area, has limited access to the mainstream of the society. Low wages, poor access to education and social differences with neighboring communities have all contributed to a poor capital accumulation within the tea workers community. This circumstance has spawned several other social problems such as bonded labor, child labor, destitution and trafficking of women and children. The area has very limited employment opportunities where almost 80% of the males (15-50 yrs.) have to go out for distress migration.

Undulating Red-lateritic Zone

The western part of the West Bengal is under Central Indian Plateau region, geologically which is one of the oldest parts of the land. Undulating rocky terrain, scanty and erratic rainfall and the existence of lateritic red soil are some of the common features of this area. This area mostly falls under the eastern plateau and hills zone of Indian agro-climatic zone where average productivity of land is less than the other areas of West Bengal. Undulated topography, poor annual average rainfall, stretches of barren and mono-cropped desiccated land not only responsible for less production but it also dries up the overall economy of this region.

Coastal Saline

PRASARI’s coastal operation is in the Indian Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site is home to 2.79 million people, most of them live in environmentally hazardous areas. This is accentuated by the fact that the Sunderbans is facing the adverse effects of climate change and facing tropical cyclones in about five years.PRASARI works in coastal saline delta is across all 19 blocks. The largest mangrove delta has 1100 villages with the primary livelihoods of agriculture and fishery. PRASARI works with the community institutions (Women platforms in the villages) to analyse the resources, their issues and potential for their husbandry and integration for the livelihoods.
